Land Between the Lakes Project research papers, 1965-1968.

Research materials generated by the Land Between the Lakes Project, directed by J. Milton Henry. Under contract from the Tennessee Valley Authority, the mission of the project was to gather materials and write a history of the area between Lake Barkley on the Cumberland River and Kentucky Lake on the Tennessee River. The area includes parts of Stewart County, Tennessee and Trigg and Lyon counties, Kentucky. Collection consists primarily of materials related to Stewart County, including correspondence, cemetery records, church records, genealogical data, and information on commerce and steamboats; black history; freemasonry; iron works; nightrider activities; the oil, timber, and whiskey industries; schools; and the villages of Model, Tennessee Ridge, and Tharpe (all in Tennessee). Correspondence is predominantly outgoing letters of J. Milton Henry, whose most frequent correspondents were officials of the TVA Land Between the Lakes Project, including Robert H. Douglas, Fred B. Fields, Robert M. Howes, W. Sherrill Milliken, and Harold Vann Morgan. Other prominent correspondents are Lester Acree, Herbert Champion, Roger H. Futrell, Mike E. Lane, Dr. M.H. Moseley, and W.S. Nickell. Four Civil War letters of James Joseph Hallums, a Confederate soldier, are also included. The letters describe work on the fortifications of Fort Donelson, Tenn., prison conditions at Camp Butler, Ill., and the Atlanta campaign.
